Spam is that "unique" canned meat product that has been popular in the United States and around the world for over 50 years. The US company Hormel introduced Spam to the world in 1937. It is a combination of pork and other ingredients. Spam is sold in small tin containers and can be eaten right out of the can! However, the most popular Spam recipe in the state of Hawaii is probably Spam fried rice and/or the famous "Spam Musubi". The Spam musubi is a combination of Spam, sushi rice and a type of roasted seaweed called nori. Extremely popular in Hawaii, a couple spam musubi can make for a quite affordable lunch option ($2 each) amongst the luxury hotels/restaurants of Waikiki.
Today, Hawaii consumes more Spam (per capita) than any other state in the United States of America....hence, Oahu's annual Spam Jam Festival in Waikiki. Every year, in late spring, the city of Waikiki shuts down it's main street, Kalakaua Avenue. This approximately 10-block Block Party is a celebration of Hawaii's love for this famous "mystery meat". The annual Spam Jam offers stages with music, local vendors and chefs from around the islands. This year we had the esteemed privilege of sampling such delicacies as:
- Spam cheesecake
- Spam chili and rice
- Deep-fried Spam fritters
- Spam macadamia nuts
- Spam Lau Lau
- Spam hash cake sliders
- Spam brittle ice cream
