"Gabby" Pahinui (Philip Kunia Pahinui) was born on the island of Oahu in 1921. Gabby never developed the skill of reading sheet music. Instead, he played music alongside established musicians and often led legendary backyard jam sessions with the natural gift of a keen ear for music, sometimes referred to as perfect pitch.
Gabby had ten children. His children also shared his love for Hawaiian music and some made it into a career for themselves. Gabby's son, Cyril Pahinui, is one of the Pahinui siblings that can be seen performing live music in and around the Hawaiian Islands today.
