These days, lau lau can be made with a combination of pork, salted butterfish, chicken and/or beef. Commonly seen as part of a typical "Hawaiian Plate" plate lunch, Lau Lau is served with kalua pork, poi, lomi salmon, chicken long rice, macaroni salad and/or white rice. At Private Tours Hawaii, our absolute favorite Hawaiian Lau Lau is just outside of Waikiki at Ono Hawaiian Food. Ono Hawaiian Food is a locally owned/operated business in Kapahulu.
Lau Lau is a local Hawaiian dish that takes you back to the times of ancient Hawaii. In old Hawaii, lau lau was prepared by wrapping pork (usually pork shoulder) in several taro leaves. Then, the meat and taro leaves were tied up in 2 to 3 ti leaves, a more coarse green leaf. Finally, this entire package of meat and greens were placed inside an imu (an underground oven). After several hours roasting in the imu, the flavors from the meat and taro leaves combine to make the perfect representation of Hawaiian "Soul Food".
