Hana is the word for bay in the Hawaiian Language. Although it is one of the most beautiful natural areas on the island of Oahu, there were few ancient Hawaiian civilizations who settled here due to the lack of fresh water.
Hanauma is the location of perhaps the last site of eruptions during the Honolulu volcanic series. The crater went dormant some 32,000 years ago. At that point it was a tuff cone crater cylindrical in shape. Wave erosion eventually cut through the low, southeast wall of the crater, forming the current bay.
